A Family Affair

I’ve been involved in the MS Walks for 17 years now. The walks have become a family tradition like Christmas mornings and favourite family vacations. What better way to bring a family together than through a crisp April morning, a Timmy’s double double, and tightening our laces to help find an end to a disease that has invaded our homes, attempted to steal our joy, and impacted our families.

My daughters were just eight and three years of age when we walked for the first time in 1993. They still can recall fond memories made during their years growing up, walking to end MS. They asked everyone they knew to sponsor them and wore the hard-earned MS Walk T-shirt with pride. From frosty breath, to mittens and mud, to face paintings, to Loblaw’s lunches – my girls were there. They walked alongside me as we raised money to stop the illness that had made its unwelcome home in their young lives.

Their little sister arrived in 1994 and she, too, took up the family tradition, and walked and strolled with us.

In the past few years, I’ve moved behind the scenes, helping in the planning, registration, and publicity of the MS walk. But my heart still tugs as I watch hundreds of people warm up and head outdoors in the chilled morning air to start the walk. A lump grows in my throat. They are changing the world!

As the rented school cafeteria quiets down in anticipation for the weary walkers’ return in a couple of hours, a part of me still wishes I was out there with them, walking alongside.

My oldest daughter is 24 now and expecting her first child, a son in July. My hope is she will instil the same family tradition, teaching her little guy the value in walking, not because he can, but because so many others can’t.

Welcome!

On behalf of the MS Society of Canada, welcome to the brand new MS Walk blog! This is a place where we’ll share stories and information about the MS Walk – what the event means to us, fundraising tips, news and updates, and all other things Walk-related. We look forward to your contributions and encourage you to join the conversation as often as you can!

The MS Walk is only two months away. Spread the word, raise those pledges, and know that you are making a difference in the lives of people who live with MS. Who knows? Your step just might be the one that ends multiple sclerosis.

Be a walker. Be an end to MS.

The Life of a Volunteer Coordinator for the MS Society…

When presented with the opportunity to blog for the MS Society, I was thrilled! I get to share my thoughts and experiences with the very volunteers that play a key part in this organization.

So, where does one start - perhaps the beginning.

I came to the MS Society of Canada in mid-November and was excited to get started! My job consists of recruiting all the volunteers for the MS Walk Toronto, the Rona Bike Tours, LOM Gala, MS Carnation Campaign and to recruit the Read-A-Thon Guest Speakers.

The best part of my job is meeting all the volunteers. It’s amazing how many volunteers have been involved with the MS Society. I think what’s even more fascinating is the number of years volunteers have committed to the organization. Volunteers definitely have the best stories to tell!

Whether you’re a participant or a volunteer, Thank you for being part of that step towards finding a cure; big or small we’re one step closer thanks to you.

Cheers,
Clarinda

Fond memories of the MS Walk

Some of my fondest memories of being associated with the MS Society of Canada, and in particular the Scarborough chapter, are participating in the yearly WALKS.

Recalling my first walk experience in 1993, I was still in the initial stages of my journey with MS, and in a bad flare-up. I was far from well. But I was determined to walk, gimpy legs and all. My mother, husband and two little girls walked with me. As I stood in line to register, I was overcome with the urge to start shaking the hands of the people around me. I was overcome with emotion. Every single person in that line was there for one common purpose – to raise money to find a cure to end MS – the disease that was taking a toll on my body.

I choked back tears as I realized their sacrifice. They were prepared to walk many kilometres, no matter the weather, the time, or the aching feet that were sure to follow.

I realized that no matter the reason why each person walked, we were united in our humanity on that cold spring morning. We were all there to put an end to multiple sclerosis.

And every year since, I am there, ready to do whatever needs doing, joining with thousands across this great nation of ours, to raise money to beat MS.

Will you join me?

Let's walk and roll!

We will end MS.

Be a Walker. Be an End to MS

Well lets get to know each other. I am Nadine & the chair of the Etobicoke MS Walk. I have MS but it doesn't have me. That's the way I look at it. I hope over the next few months I can inspire you to increase your fundraising total from last year. Isn't that what we're all here for anyways? Be relentless, never take "I'll catch you later" for an answer and believe in yourself that you will reach your fundraising goal. OH just go for it, exceed it!! Start with your family & be passionate on why you are participating in the Walk. It won't be long before your total goes up. Catch you next time.......Be a walker. Be an end to MS.
