Come join us at MS Summer Camp!

“[the best thing about camp was] that it enables the teens to get together and share their experiences with their disease, so that they see they are not alone!” – Parent of a camper
The 7th annual MS Summer Camp program is fast approaching. This summer, from August 17-24, children and teens with MS will have an opportunity to meet for a week long adventure full of fun and new friends!

This year’s camp will be hosted at a stunning new location – Easter Seals Camp Horizon near Calgary, Alberta. Nestled in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, children will quickly feel at ease and get a break from the stress associated with MS. But you haven’t heard the best part yet, the camp is FREE to attend thanks to the support of our generous sponsors, the Slaight Family Foundation and Fondation Bergeron-Jetté!

For more information and to download a camp application, visit mssociety.ca/camp.

Walk Diary: Sault Ste. Marie Mandarin MS Walk

This week’s entry is another from MS Society staff member Pat.S.

This year’s Sault Ste. Marie Mandarin MS Walk can be characterized as one of the best ever!  Held on Sunday, May 5 at Roberta Bondar Pavilion, the event had 120 participants and raised just over $19,000. WooHoo!

Participants had a fun afternoon of activities that included a pre-walk warm up, led by staff from the local Goodlife Fitness, and a barbeque lunch after the event with the hot dogs being supplied by M&M Meat Shops (located on Trunk Rd. in Sault Ste. Marie).

A special thanks goes out to Sherri D. for her dedication to the Mandarin MS Walk. As a long standing chairperson for the Sault Ste. Marie, Sherri has been organizing the event for the last 16 years. Without Sherri the Sault Ste. Marie Mandarin MS Walk would not be as successful.

Congratulations to all the participants, volunteers and staff. We can’t wait for the 2014 Sault Ste. Marie Mandarin MS Walk!

Walk Diary: Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk

Relive the 2013 Mandarin MS Walk events with this summer’s walk diary! Read up on events across the province or experience your favorite moments all over again. Over the summer we will be sharing highlights and results from some of our events. This week’s journal comes from walk staff member Pat S., about the Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk.

The 2013 Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk was held on Sunday, May 5 at St. Mark Catholic School.  The event included 386 participants and raised just over $86,000 for people living with MS. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The majority of participants were even wearing shorts…a big change from previous years!

Activities at the Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk included the opportunity to have TeamMS photos taken in front of an OPP surveillance truck and Cold Stone Creamery was on site to give all participants a well-deserved treat upon their return from the 5km or 10km walk.

This year’s top fundraisers (anyone who raised $1000+) in Etobicoke were also entered into a draw to win two airline tickets to anywhere in North America, courtesy of Air Canada.  This year’s lucky winner was Charlene G. who raised $1525. Congratulations Charlene and thank you for your continued support!

16th Annual RBC Golf Tournament to end MS

On Friday June 7, the MS Society of Canada and RBC Procurement celebrated 16 years together at the annual RBC Golf Tournament to end MS. Graciously hosted at Angus Glen Golf Course and Mandarin Golf and Country Club in Markham, the tournament was a fun filled day with great networking opportunities and a challenging game on the greens.

This year’s tournament raised an astounding $500,000 for peadiatric MS research, which brings the 16 year total to more than $6.3 million!
Participants and sponsors play a critical role in advancing the MS Society of Canada's fight to end MS. Without your support, this milestone would not have been possible.

A different kind of walker

In the 22 years of the MS Walk, we never imagined robots joining the fight to end MS! You can say the future came early during the 2013 Burlington Mandarin MS Walk. Burlington walkers got the pleasure of being introduced to students from Robert Bateman High School in an interesting way. As you can see above, students from the school engineered a robot to walk this year’s course. Their robot was fitted with a monitor as a head, which displayed students faces as the robot walked. Considering the ingenuity behind the student’s creation, we hope the students and their robot return for next year’s Burlington event.  Maybe they’ll even come back with an army of robots!

We can’t wait to see the type of walkers the 2014 Mandarin MS Walk events bring!
